as a young neurodivergent gender-creative child in the early 00's, i was pretty isolated, and i found a lot of solace in my special interests and the ways people were able to connect over those interests online.
as i got older, i got really insecure about having such intense interests in things my peers found weird and unnerving, so i spent a lot of time and energy trying to force myself to mask and live up to neurotypical standards.
i got back into collecting, repairing, and customizing furbies when i was 17, after finding some at the thrift store with my queer punk friends.
building my furby family has been largely a journey of unmasking, embracing my creative identity, and finding connection with others who accept and embrace me as my full, authentic, queer, obsessive self.
